Actions and qualities: Antioxidant and immune-boosting. Chokeberries are high in vitamins A, C, and E, and a good source of potassium, manganese, magnesium, zinc, iron, and fiber. They can aid digestions, ward off colds, regulate blood pressure and cholesterol, and promote heart health. The twigs and leaves can be made into a tea.
Specific uses: In culinary applications, chokeberries may be made into syrups, juices, and jams, or added to pies, muffins, cakes, and tarts.
Contraindications: Pregnant and nursing mothers should consult a physician before use.
History and lore: Aside from a food source, Aronia berries were also used by indigenous peoples as dye, war paint, and a method of treating cuts.
