Actions and qualities: Soothing to upset stomachs, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, used to treat coughs and cramps of all kinds. Smells like sweet oregano.

Specific uses: This is the garden variety of the wild bee balm and holds most of the same qualities but contains a vivid red color and an even spicier taste and smell.

Contraindications: Should be avoided by pregnant and nursing mothers. Some people may have skin sensitivities when used topically.

History and lore: Its wild variety commonly grew on the banks of the Oswego River in New York and was used by Native North Americans as a tea, known as Oswego tea.
