Actions and qualities: Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Fireweed tea can benefit the digestive, circulatory, and immune systems. It is also used to treat migraines, colds and fevers, wounds, ulcers and tumors, and enlarged prostate.
Specific uses: Young stems and leaves can be eaten raw and boast high levels of Vitamin C. Leaves can also be made into a tea, sometimes blended with mint or thyme. Fireweed flowers are traditionally made into jelly in the Yukon.
Contraindications: Though no side effects are known, pregnant and nursing mothers should consult a physician before use.
History and lore: The name fireweed comes from flower’s tendency to grow in recently burned areas, following forest fires or other disturbances. It became known as ‘bombweed’ in Britain when it rapidly colonized bomb craters during WWII.
