Actions and qualities: Offers immune system support, used as a digestive aid, antibacterial, diuretic, pain relief, and respiratory aid. High in vitamin D, calcium and iron.
Specific uses: Most commonly used as a culinary herb, with fresh roots ground into a paste and used as a condiment or infused into vinegar. A spoonful can be eaten straight up to treat lung constriction, or can be used topically as a poultice on the chest to help clear congestion. It is also commonly found in tinctures and capsules. It also makes a great addition to teas.
Contraindications: In large doses it can cause digestive tract and stomach discomfort. People with kidney disorders and hyperthyroidism should consult a doctor before use. Not recommended for pregnant or nursing mothers.
History and lore: Early Greeks used horseradish as a topical treatment to reduce lower back pain and stimulate libido.
