Actions and qualities: Antiviral, anxiety relief, tension relieving, antiviral, digestive aid, appetite stimulant, and used in skin relief applications such as rashes, itching and even cold sores. It is used in oral herpes treatments.
Specific uses: As a tea it has a very sweet citrus like flavor. In tincture it can be taken for quick anxiety relief. It is recommended to take a few drops on a sugar cube to help stimulate the lack of appetite that is suppressed by nerves. It is also commonly made into a syrup.
Contraindications: May affect thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and interact with thyroid medication. Pregnant and nursing mothers should consult a physician before use.
History and lore: At certain times it was believed that having lemon balm syrup in one's home was essential to the wellbeing of the entire household. It was used as a love charm in the Middle Ages, placed in pillows or infused into baths to attract one’s heart’s desire.
