Actions and qualities: Anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, pain relieving, fever reducing, used to maintain healthy cholesterol levels, relieve joint pain and treat arthritis.
Specific uses: Used as a culinary herb in traditional Asian cooking. It can be made into a delicious tea, or tincture. It can be used as an incense, added to baths or infused into poultices. It can be added to salves and oils, and it is used for perfume and as an insecticide. It can even be used as a firestarter!
Contraindications: There have been some reported cases of allergic skin reactions. Pregnant and nursing mothers should consult a physician before use.
History and lore: Used traditionally for psychic cleansing and opening. It was also commonly used in lust potions and said to attract fairies. Citronella, which is used to repel mosquitos, is derived from lemongrass and was first popularized at the 1951 World’s Fair.
