Actions and qualities: Antibacterial; anti-inflammatory; diuretic; decongestant; appetite stimulant; fever reducer; regulates menstruation; used to treat stomach discomfort, sore throat, migraines, and urinary tract problems. It is also high in vitamins C and B.
Specific uses: It can be used as a culinary herb and imparts a strong celery-like flavor. The roots can be made into a tea or tincture to help with congestion. It can be added to salves, oils, poultices and baths. It is traditionally candied and chewed to promote alertness. Similar to anise seeds, lovage seeds are often chewed to aid with digestion.
Contraindications: May cause photodermatitis with skin contact. Should be avoided by those with kidney disease or those taking diuretics. Pregnant and nursing mothers should consult a physician before use.
History and lore: It is a key component in traditional medieval love potions. Greeks would chew the leaves after meals to aid in digestion. Leaves were placed in shoes to relieve weary feet.
