Actions and qualities: Diuretic, digestive aid, narcotic, pain relief, stimulant, sedative, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. Contains high levels of Vitamin C.
Specific uses: The bright flowers impart citrusy flavor, making great garnishes on salads and soups. The leaves and flowers can be made into a poultice or ointment for topical applications, and a decoction, juice, or tea when ingested medicinally.
Contraindications: It should be avoided by pregnant and nursing mothers as well as children under two.
History and lore: Early Christians throughout Europe would offer marigold flowers to the Virgin Mary when they couldn’t afford coins, hence the name “Mary’s Gold.”
