Alternative names: Mexican tarragon, ‘the dark one’
Parts used: Leaves and flowers
Actions and qualities: Diuretic, digestive aid, narcotic, pain relief, stimulant, and sedative.
Specific uses: Leaves are dried and used as a culinary herb. The flavor is similar to anise or tarragon. It is traditionally burned as an incense. It can also be used in an oil or salve but should not be taken in large amounts as a tea or tincture, as it can have some mind altering effects.
Contraindications: In stronger preparations it has a rare combination of narcotic, stimulant, and sedative properties. It should be taken in caution and in small doses. As a culinary herb, these effects are rarely apparent because the dose is so low. In large doses it is toxic and can cause stomach pain, nausea and dizziness. It should be avoided by pregnant and nursing mothers as well as children under two.
History and lore: Known as ‘the dark one,” it is traditionally used to enhance the effects of peyote when smoked during ceremony. It was rubbed on the chests of Aztec people to ensure safety when crossing rivers. Alternatively, it was powdered and blown into the faces of victims of human sacrifice to stupefy them beforehand. It is linked to the Aztec god Tlaloc.
