Actions and qualities: Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, decongestant. High in iron, calcium, potassium and a variety of vitamins. Used to regulate healthy cholesterol levels, treat respiratory infections, heal wounds, or act as a mild laxative.
Specific uses: Its most common use today is topical; the fresh leaves can be chewed to make a ‘spit poultice’ that can be placed on bee stings and wounds to offer quick relief. The leaves make a great addition to salves, oils, or bath teas, or can be added to teas and tinctures. The seeds can be collected and consumed as a food source high in omega 3 fatty acids.
Contraindications: It may interfere with a variety of medications. Those taking medications or pregnant and nursing mothers should consult a physician before use. It should not be taken by people experiencing severe intestinal pain.
History and lore: Its common name ‘Whiteman’s footprint’ comes from the history of European settlers bringing the plant to North America; the plant purportedly followed them everywhere they went.
