St. John's Wort - Hypericum perforatum
Alternative names: Goat weed, klamath weed, hypericaum, Saint Joan’s wort
Parts used: Flowers and upper young leaves
Actions and qualities: Antibacterial and wound healing. It is used to treat nerve pain, bruises, depression, anxiety, PMS symptoms, menopause symptoms, and hemorrhoids. It can help smokers quit and has even had some successful results in cancer treatments.
Specific uses: Salve, oil, poultice, bath tea, capsule, tincture, and tea.
Contraindications: Some people have reported cases of photosensitivity. Don't take in large does or continually. Side effects may include stomach discomfort, headaches, and tingling.
History and lore: It earned its name because it blooms around the summer solstice which is also near Saint John’s festival. Cattle that have eaten too much of the plant have died from photosensitivity.
